“They” explores the relationship between trauma and religion, highlighting the perspective of one distanced from organized faith at an early age. The piece takes a non-partisan stance on these institutions, focusing on the rich imagery and weightiness of traditional religious practice and the role that trauma has in driving one towards or away from faith. The symbols found in the painting are collected from a variety of religious institutions, allowing the viewer to explore their own relationship with the themes and draw their own conclusions through an outsider-looking-in perspective.
